In many regions, “available land” is no longer “usable land.” Years of intensive farming, rising salinity, and declining soil structure have left growers with degraded fields that can’t deliver stable yields especially when irrigation water quality is suboptimal.
That’s exactly the challenge we set out to address in Argentina, together with partners and with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
The challenge: degraded soils + suboptimal irrigation water
Alfalfa is a strategic crop for livestock systems and soil health, but it’s also sensitive during establishment. In degraded soils, emergence and early vigor often fall short leading to weak stands, reduced biomass, and lower resilience over the season.
When water quality is also compromised (e.g., higher salinity), farmers face a double constraint:
- Reduced germination and uneven establishment
- Slower root development and weaker plant vigor
- Higher risk of yield volatility over the season
The approach: seed treatment designed for abiotic stress
Salicrop develops non-GMO seed treatment protocols that improve resistance to abiotic stresses, including salinity and drought. In this project, the goal is to support alfalfa establishment and performance under the specific realities of degraded land and suboptimal water without requiring growers to change their farming routine.
Why this matters
If we can enable alfalfa to establish and perform in these conditions, the impact is larger than one crop:
- More stable biomass production for livestock value chains
- Improved land productivity where farming is currently limited
- A practical pathway to better soil function over time, supported by a robust alfalfa stand

This project is part of our broader effort to help agriculture adapt to climate stress by starting where impact is most scalable: the seed.
